Abstract:
Current regulatory guidance on flood protection at nuclear power plants is contained in the Regulatory Guide 1.102, Flood Protection for Nuclear Power Plants Nuclear Regulatory Commission, 1976. Regulatory Guide 1.102 requires that structures, systems, and components important to safety be designed to withstand the effects of natural phenomena such as floods, tsunami, and seiches without loss of capability to perform their safety functions. These requirements remain the same in 2013 as they did in 1976, however, the current technology, understanding and practice has changed. This report describes current 2013 flood protection feature types and applications for protecting safety-related structures, systems, and components. This document compiles and ties together information from multiple U.S. Army Corps of Engineers manuals in order to provide a resource of scientific and technical background concerning various flood protection structures and their associated risk and reliability. Several chapters and sections in this report summarize foundational U.S. Army Corps of Engineers documents.
