In this report we will provide a technical description of three femtosecond laser-based optical spectroscopic techniques that we have constructed with DURIP support for probing novel electronic properties of 5d transition metal oxide compounds. 1 We demonstrate a new method to perform nonlinear optical rotational anisotropy experiments on small single crystals at low temperatures, which enables the crystallographic and magnetic symmetries of many correlated electron phases to be resolved on micron length scales for the first time. We also discuss a scheme to increase the data collection frequency of these measurements by over three orders of magnitude to greatly improve the sensitivity to small changes in symmetry.
