Abstract:

In early 2014, the Department of Defense DoD asked the RAND National Defense Research Institute to conduct an independent assessment of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination in the military an assessment last conducted in 2012 by the department itself through the Workplace and Gender Relations Survey of Active-Duty Personnel WGRA. At the request of the Coast Guard, RAND also included a sample of Coast Guard active-duty and reserve members in the 2014 study. The 2014 RAND Military Workplace Study RMWS is based on a much larger sample of the military community than previous surveys men and women, actiactive-duty reserve component, and including the four DoD military services plus the Coast Guard and it is designed to more precisely estimate the total number of service members experiencing sexual assaults, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination. The objectives of the 2014 survey were to establish precise and objective estimates of the percentage of service members who experience sexual assault, sexual harassment, and gender discrimination describe the characteristics of these incidents, such as where and when they occurred, who harassed or assaulted the member, whether the event was reported, and what services the member sought. identify barriers to reporting these incidents, and barriers to the receipt of support and legal services.
