This grant pertains to finding novel approaches for storage of platelets for transfusion. Our project proposes to determine the efficacy of using a pathogen inactivation technique Mirasol coupled with a platelet storage solution Plasmalyte to extend the life of stored platelets. Our project also aims to determine how long acceptable platelet viability can be maintained in platelets derived from whole blood stored at 4 C. We have completed the regulatory activities necessary to initiate enrollment in the study of platelets in whole blood. We have developed the documents IRB application, radiation safety application, consent etc. for submission of the MirasolPlasmalyte portion of the study.
