The longevity and hydraulic performance of several permeable reactive barriers PRB were evaluated using a variety of conventional and innovative tools. Accelerated long-term column tests simulating the changes in reactivity of granular iron barriers at two Department of Defense DoD sites showed reductions in trichloroethylene TCE degradation rate by factors of between two and four, upon exposure to 1,300 pore volumes of groundwater. Precipitation of certain dissolved solids from the groundwater was found to be the main cause of reactivity loss.
