SARNAM was used to assess the noise emission from a proposed new firing range, and to explore options to reduce community noise impact. Options were identified that provided 5 to 10 dB reductions. SARNAM was shown to reduce the labor and cost of small arms noise analysis by 65. SARNAM was validated by comparing noise level predictions with comprehensive measurements of noise from an active military range over a time period of several months. The accuracy of noise dose quantification was shown to be acceptable, much more reliable than can be obtained by short-term monitoring because of the large variance in received noise level due to weather conditions. Significantly, the validation effort clarified the need for improved methods of noise impact assessment.
