Abstract:
This report details the development of mathematical models that describe the effects of acute radiation exposure on hematopoiesis. The models were developed from an existing structure and modified so that they could be integrated with effects on hematopoiesis from other injuries, such as thermal burns. Experimental data provided insight on many model parameters other parameters were fit to case study data. The final models were validated against additional case study data. The outcome of our work are models that describe the dose response of circulating platelets, granulocytes, and lymphocytes as a function of time after irradiation. The information provided is valuable in understanding the physiological effects of radiation exposure and the time course of these effects.
