Abstract:

This paper will explore the original intent behind the concept of Separation of Church and State, show how the military first implemented the concept, explore several case studies, and demonstrate how well the military has done in enforcing the concept of Separation of Church and State. The thesis proves that the military has not gone too far with enforcement, but, in fact, been able to find the right balance to protect both the government from establishing a law preferential to one religion, while simultaneously protecting free religious expression by military members.
