Abstract:

It is difficult, or even impossible, to build up the peace and security of a nation without addressing its economic, social, and political problems. Nepal is facing internal security threats due to extreme poverty, broad societal discrimination, and an unstable political system. The Government of Nepal GoN has often mobilized the Nepalese Army NA to manage and mitigate its internal problems, but it fails to prescribe definite roles and responsibilities due to lack of a clear and viable national security strategy. This thesis shows that the NA can bolster Nepals national security by conducting infrastructure development, wildlife and nature conservation, assistance to civil authorities, and disaster management through rescue and relief operations. The author recommends that the NA continue stability operations, maintain its credibility and trust of the civilian population, and remain accountable to the democratic government.
