Abstract:
This paper discusses the root causes of the South China Sea disputes from the perspectives of geopolitics, natural resources, history, and current threats. The paper provides a practical analysis of how to apply conflict prevention and confidence building measures to lessen the tension between China and ASEAN-related or other claimants. Most importantly, it also proposes recommendations for better bilateral, multilateral, regional, and international mechanisms to reduce potential conflict and manage stability in this region.
