Abstract:

Chinas drive to firmly establish itself as the regional hegemony in East Asia is facing increasing pressure from various sectors of their society. The People s Liberation Army PLA, as the guardian of the Communist Party and the keeper of internal stability is not immune to these factors. Rampant corruption across the PLA and especially across its most senior leadership now threatens the very core values of the PLA. If left unchecked, this corruption and its institutionalization in the PLA officer corps may even extinguish Chinas drive to become the dominant power in East Asia.
