The people of Europe have cooperated with each other and fought each other through centuries. The majority of wars known to mankind occurred on the European continent. It took the horrors of two world wars for Europeans to finally set aside their disputes and to choose peaceful coexistence on a more permanent basis. The creation of the European Union EU provided an opportunity for the people of Europe to establish a common political, economic and security community. Today, there are 50 sovereign countries in the continent of Europe. This paper discusses the evolution of security in the European Union. It also describes what security means in terms of a European security community. It then explains the EUs relation with NATO and concludes with some recommendations on the future development of security in Europe.
