Abstract:

There is a growing chorus of senior military leaders, think tank personnel, and students in academic environments who argue that the Armys process for developing strategic leaders is not producing officers who are prepared to operate in the Joint, Interagency, Intergovernmental, and Multinational JIIM environment. This paper examines Infantry and Armor progression models, addresses the reasons why the current officer assignment developmental model is contributing to the problem, and investigates the cultural underpinnings that perpetuate the problem. The paper offers practical recommendations for improving the officer assignment model, including giving officers broadening experiences that will make them better prepared to operate in the strategic environment.
