Abstract:

The importance of Africa has increased significantly over the last decade for a variety of reasons, including increased terrorist activities, regional economic concerns, and international migration. Faced with the growing strategic importance of Africa, this paper will examine the strategic policies of the United States and the European Union EU towards Africa, and determine what challenges they will face in the Trans-Sahel region over the next 10 years. To accomplish this task, the paper will review pertinent U.S. and EU national strategic policy documents and specific actions they have taken in the Trans-Sahel, and identify which policies and actions have been successful or unsuccessful. The paper concludes with emerging questions that must be answered as the United States reforms its policy towards the Trans-Sahel, and recommendations for synchronizing the policies of the United States and the European Union toward the region.
