Abstract:

The MIDHT project in Year 1 focused on three 3 distinct but related arms of research and development involving health information technology HIT and health information exchange HIE capabilities within a rural healthcare system in Southwestern Pennsylvania. The goal was to empower both providers and patients with technologies aimed to improve the quality and coordination of care, reduce medical errors, promote patient safety and reduce overall healthcare costs. Many lessons were learned in deploying a HIE testbed infrastructure for data exchange between Conemaugh Health System CHS facilities and externally with the Department of Defense DoD. Video teleconferencing VTC proved effective in delivering exercise and nutrition information to a metabolic syndrome population whereas online journal usage steadily declined over the course of one year. A manuscript detailing Personal Health Records PHR was successfully accepted for publication.
