The purpose of this project was to develop a prototype piezoelectric crystal monitor for hydrogen chloride. The initial evaluation was to concentrate on developing selective coatings for HC1 and the preliminary design of the monitor. A preliminary prototype PZ instrument was developed and the performance of some very promising coatings has been evaluated with respect to sensitivity, selectivity, stability, reversibility and other important analytical parameters. The proposed coatings THEED, amine 220 and mercury can be successfully used for the detection of low concentrations of HCl, either continuously or as a dosimeter.
