Abstract:

A maximum likelihood approach to solving the geostatistical estimation problem is being pursued whereby the geostatistical parameters, together with pick-error variances, are simultaneously fit to the second-order statistics of the observed travel-time residuals. The maximum likelihood criterion for the optimal parameter values reduces to a set of coupled, nonlinear equations which, in general, must be solved numerically. The geostatistical estimation problem within a maximum-likelihood framework has been formulated and an approach for its numerical solution outlined.
