This report reviews the physics of recoil impulse and kinetic energy and the means to alter either the magnitude of these dynamic quantities or the temporal distribution of resulting interaction forces by purposeful or serendipitous mechanical filtering. Emphasis is placed on understanding the problem and the experimental approach needed to put recoilshoulder interactions on a firm scientific basis.
