Abstract:
This paper will explore the application of time as a critical factor in exercising the elements of national power, specifically differences in how the concept of time is applied by the United States and China. The paper will discuss diplomatic, informational, military, and economic aspects of time, and examine whether time plays a critical role in each element of national power. During an analysis of the military element of power, a specific question for exploration is as follows Does time serve as a domain of warfare similar to the domains of land, air, maritime, space, and cyberspace How does time in the Chinese mindset relate to Ancient Chinese Stratagems and how they are used today against the United States The paper will conclude with a discussion of the potential for future conflict between China and the United States, and an analysis of how time, in Chinese national strategy, is evident in its current interactions with the United States.
