Abstract:

This Strategy Research Project SRP addresses the mandate, operations, and regional strategic effect of the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon UNIFIL, with a particular focus on the national security of Lebanon. The SRP examines UNIFILs initial deployment and focuses on its expanded peacekeeping mandate, mission, and operations that took place following the armed conflict between the military wing of Hezbollah and Israeli forces in July-August 2006, and the action of the United Nations Security Council through Resolution 1701. The SRP addresses the collaboration between UNIFIL and the Lebanese Armed Forces LAF in safeguarding the peace along the Lebanese-Israeli border and providing domestic stability in South Lebanon. The SRP also analyzes UNIFILs presence with respect to the national security interests of various regional state actors. The SRP concludes that the strengthening of the LAFs capabilities will provide the necessary political parameters for the eventual withdrawal of UNIFIL from Lebanon.
