Abstract:

Support for anonymous communication in hostile environments is the main goal of DARPAs Safer Warfighter Communications program DARPA-BAA-10-69 SAFER. Despite the fact that the word is regularly encountered in common parlance, anonymity is actually a subtle concept - one that the computer-science community has worked hard and not yet completely successfully to define precisely. This briefing paper explains the concept of anonymity in the context of the SAFER program it is intended for a general audience rather than for one with professional expertise in computer science and data networking.
