Violence caused by Drug Trafficking Organizations DTOs has increased in Mexico in recent years, calling into question the stability of the state itself. In an attempt to get security under control, the Government of Mexico has relied on the military to supplement, and in most cases replace, police forces at the federal, state, and local levels to combat DTOs. While some have criticized President Calderon for his strategy of using the military in a law enforcement role, the military is the only Mexican institution that can achieve the long-term security goals Mexico needs to reestablish the rule of law. The trust, effectiveness, and capabilities that the military brings to the fight can be the impetus for change, enhancing necessary reforms to Mexican law enforcement and creating a viable and long-lasting solution.
