Barriers to Greater Participation by Women in Afghan Elections

This report discusses the level of womens participation in the elections held on August 20, 2009 and the extent to which the Afghan government created an environment conducive for women to vote openly and freely. Womens participation is significant to the electoral process because they comprise approximately half of Afghanistans population. This report includes recommendations for the U.S. Ambassador to Afghanistan to encourage the Afghan government and international community to take measures to encourage greater participation by women in future elections including the 2010 elections.
