Abstract:

The Office of the Undersecretary of Defense for Personnel and Readiness OUSDPR established the Advanced Distributed Learning ADL Initiative in 1997 to assist the military Services in making learning education, training, and performancedecision aiding available on-demand, anytime and anywhere. ADL was intended to capitalize on opportunities provided by research on learning technology. These opportunities suggested that technology could make the benefits of individualized tutoring affordable by reducing the costs and increasing the effectiveness of learning. The empirical research on which these opportunities were based continues to be relevant and is reviewed in this report.
