The University of Southern California Information Sciences Institute USCISI conducted exploratory studies to establish the need for and the value of innovative research on domain-specific architectures, applications, and tools based on the challenges posed by computational bottlenecks in DoD applications. The study was driven by key representative applications limited in performance by current computing performance and tool chains. There are several related research areas that the ACAR project studied that have significant potential benefits to DoD applications multi-core application specific architectures, emulation systems, automatic board generation, design patterns for increasing productivity, and domain-specific languages. USCISI recommends further research in these areas.
