Abstract:

Since being established in 1955, alliance and national defense has been the central mission of the Bundeswehr until the 1990s. Personnel and equipment, training and exercises and tactics and operational planning were geared to a conventional war on German territory. Back then all the logistics was prepared to supply major units with large quantities of consumables, including ammunition, for the conduct of delaying or high-intensity defense operations at the inner-German border. For this purpose, a dense network of fixed logistic facilities was established that were capable of providing, for example, large amounts of most different but planned packages of ammunition within a short period of time. This was an indispensable prerequisite for the Bundeswehrs, and hence NATOs defense capability.
