Abstract:

This paper will present the logic and defend the value of a comprehensive conflict prevention strategy. First, a foundation for a successful prevention strategy will be laid out by examining the benefits, the need for national interestpolitical will, and the requirement for a successful, multilateral preventive strategy. Then, the current U.S. prevention mechanisms will be examined and will expose the disjointedness and lack of coordination between the various U.S. departmentsagencies with conflict prevention missions. In addition, two historical conflict prevention case studies will be analyzed to demonstrate how a proper conflict prevention strategy can be executed and how best practices can be implemented in the future. In conclusion, this paper will recommend a way for the United States to create and implement an effective, comprehensive conflict prevention strategy.
