High Frequency Acoustic Propagation using Level Set Methods

This paper describes a new approach to numerical solution of the high frequency approximation to the wave equation. Traditional solutions to the Eikonal equation in high frequency acoustics are obtained via ray tracing. In ray tracing, the numerical grid on which solutions are computed becomes distorted over time as rays diverge from the initial wavefront, reducing the accuracy of the solution. The level set method is a fixed grid method, whereby the user controls the underlying grid, and hence the accuracy, of the solution.
