Abstract:

The feasibility of tetranitratoborates and tetranitratoaluminates as high-oxygen carriers for oxidizer balanced green solid and ionic liquid energetic materials was demonstrated. The predicted performances of the ionic liquids represent a marked improvement over liquid energetic materials was demonstrated. The predicted performances of the ionic liquids represent a marked improvement over the presently used hydrazine while avoiding at the same time its high vapor toxicity. Simple, one-pot, one-step syntheses from inexpensive and readily available starting materials have also been developed for these materials. However, the long-term thermal stability of these compound is marginal, and work on an alternate high-oxygen carrying anion has been started. A second area of significant interest was the synthesis of DTTO and iso-DDTO. Theoretical performance calculations were carried out for both using the latest density and heat of formation values, and show that both compounds would provide significantly higher detonation pressures than HMX and CL20. Efforts were started to develop suitable methodology for their syntheses.
