Abstract:

The increased prominence of secondary suppliers in the international arms market--including the growing role of some Third World producers--has been among the most discussed trends in worldwide arms transfers in recent years. By 1984, countries outside the NATO and Warsaw Pact alliances accounted for 17 percent of the world arms market and 20 percent of the Third World market. The share of Third World arms exporters in 1984 reached almost 15 percent of the world market and about 18 percent of the Third World market. The present article examines these trends and some of their implications in greater detail.
