Abstract:

In this presentation, Secretary of Defense Les Aspin discusses how changes in the world have affected the security of Israel. Specifically, the Secretary talks about the effects of the following on Israels security the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the reemergence of Russia, the Gulf War and its effect on Iraqs war machine, the Iran-Iraq war and its effect on Irans war machine, the loss of Syrias main arms supplier and backer the USSR, Israels 14-year peace with Egypt, and Israels military superiority over any potential rival. The Secretary also discusses some of the emerging threats Israel faces today, including radicalism in general, Islamic fundamentalism, weapons of mass destruction WMD, chemical and biological weapons, nuclear weapons, and ballistic missiles the commitment of the Clinton Administration to helping Israel cope with these dangers to increase the chances to achieve peace and what the United States goals are in terms of its relationship with Israel from a defensemilitary perspective.
