The earned value method is an internationally recognized project management tool for measuring progress on projects. Despite its popularity, it has not been widely applied on software development projects. This paper proposes the use of earned value on software development projects. After a brief description of the earned value method seven software metrics appropriate for earned value application are described. The use of these metrics should facilitate more effective management of software development projects.
