Abstract:

This document describes a GIS approach that can quickly and inexpensively identify areas around military installations that are attractive to residential development -- based on proposed regional investments and policies. Analysis results can then be used to inform regional planning and to help identify long-term impacts of residential development on an installations future opportunity to train and test. Proposed state and local investment in regional planning policies and projects can alter the expected patterns of growth and should be evaluated with respect to their short and long-term impacts on the ability to conduct training and testing at the installation. For demonstration purposes, the approach is demonstrated for a multi-county area around Fort Bragg, NC.
