In the last 20 years, the U.S. military has become increasingly reliant on contractors. This paper asks the question, Are we too dependent on contractors This paper will briefly summarize a number of critiques against the use of contractors which have been explored by previous papers and books. This paper will then describe four new criticisms which have not been adequately addressed by the military or by independent research. The combination of these critiques should challenge all the services to rethink the use of and dependency on contractors. There is undoubtedly a need for military contractors and there are numerous positive arguments in their favor. However, the negative arguments have not been highlighted enough recently and the scales are now out of balance. The intent of this research paper is to encourage the U.S. military to rebalance the scales and curb the over-reliance on contractors.
