In this study we identified factors that influence retention and career development of women in the Royal Netherlands Army RNLA. These factors were identified by conducting a literature study. We discussed these factors with female soldiers and this resulted in a list of possible measures. Afterwards a large group of female soldiers filled in a questionnaire prioritizing these measures. The result is a set of recommendations and 15 specific measures for the RNLA. In general we recommend to make it easier for men and women to combine work and caretaking of children. Furthermore the culture in the army should be addressed making use of flexible solutions to combine work and caretaking is not always accepted by colleagues and management. We also think that policymakers should focus on diversity instead of gender. Finally we developed 15 specific measures the army could implement to retain women for the Royal Netherlands Army.
