Abstract:
This technical note provides an overview of techniques and maintenance requirements recommended for establishing and maintaining prairie lands. It serves as a product for the Ecosystem Management and Restoration Research Program EMRRP work unit titled Prairie Grassland Ecosystem on Corps Projects and is meant as a general guideline. In most cases, a prairie site takes at least five years to develop to maturity, which is an important point to understand before undertaking a prairie restoration project Shirley 1994. It takes time for the plant community to develop, for species diversity to increase, and for the area to regain function as a prairie ecosystem. Thus, careful planning prior to planting will make the prairie planting more successful.
