The Air Force Institute for Operational Health is directed to support environmental remediation activities when radioactive materials are involved and has an emergency response element to respond to emergencies involving missing or dispersed radioactive materials. The Contamination Monitoring System CMS was designed to locate, identify, estimate activity, and reject natural background radiation with associated location global positioning satellite system. The system collects the GPS coordinates via a Trimble GPS and associates the position with the spectral information collected by the 512 channel multi-channel analyzer SAICExploranium GR-460. The data is easily retrieved using the software supplied by the manufacturer. If a specific data point is located, the spectral information related to that position can be easily retrieved and viewed using various gamma analysis programs to determine if the material is the radionuclide of concern or naturally occurring background radiation.
