There is much discussion today about the problems of oil consumption and energy security. Since 1980, U.S. policy has been to ensure the free-flow of oil out of the Middle East region using force when necessary. This has resulted in heightened anti-American sentiment in the region, most notably among radical Islamist groups such as al Qaeda.
