Abstract:

Disease vector and nuisance pest control for routine and contingency military operations requires continual modification and updating of techniques and equipment. Coupled with changing pesticide requirements due to resistance andor environmental considerations, the military utilizes state-of-the-art techniques to ensure protection of its forces. The employment of ultra low volume ULV equipment is one example of the methods introduced since 1960 in an effort to improve flying insect control. Primary emphasis is placed on ground control techniques however, aerial dispersal equipment may be used successfully for vector-borne disease outbreaks where access or terrain curtail the use of ground equipment and vector suppression is immediately required. This memorandum provides information concerning ULV ground dispersal techniques, equipment, maintenance considerations, and methods for required equipment operation evaluation. Equipment and techniques utilized for indoor or aerial ULV dispersal of insecticides are not included.
