Past research has shown that spatial orientation and situational awareness benefits are related to the use of HMD symbology and increased performance with localized audio. The research on HMDs includes looking at the benefits of off-boresight symbology for target search and attaches tasks, developing a methodology for evaluating off-axis HMD ownship information, and the development and evaluation of the NDFR symbology for onoff-boresight viewing. The localized auditory research includes looking at the benefits of augmenting the Terrain Collision Avoidance System TCAS with 3-D audio cues, using audio cues both spoken and non-spoken to help guide a visual search, and the effects of high acceleration on audio localization. The conclusions from this research are described below.
