Detection of biological warfare agents currently relies upon either PCR and immunoassay-based methods or the combination of both. There is a wide array of PCR and immunoassay technologies available to todays scientists. Products are typically designed for a specific application, whether it is for environmental detection or diagnosis. In this report, information pertaining to the use and performance of several leading PCR and immunoassay technologies was collected and evaluated. Several new or alternative methods were also evaluated. The effectiveness of these detection devices was evaluated for the following scenarios field use, mobile laboratory use, diagnostic laboratory use, and analytical laboratory use. The evaluation criteria for each of these scenarios were based upon expert opinion.
