Abstract:

From September 2003 through June 2004 the Public Service Archaeology Program PSAP of the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign and ERDCCERL conducted an assessment of archaeological site surveys previously conducted at Fort Campbell, Kentucky Tennessee. The Fort Campbell cultural resource management CRM program had reason to believe that the archaeological site surveys conducted over the past 25 years do not provide the quality of information required to meet current Army cultural resource regulations and land management objectives. Overall, this project identified numerous deficiencies in previous archaeological site surveys at Fort Campbell. Suggested remedial and proactive measures include resurvey of a stratified random sample of previously surveyed areas to quantify the reliability of extant site data, a detailed analysis of field maps from previous projects to identify areas that may not have been surveyed, a greater specificity in future Scopes of Work, and frequent monitoring of ongoing fieldwork. Some of these recommendations had already been implemented by the current Fort Campbell CRM staff prior to this project.
