Abstract:

This is an annual report of the 3rd grant year. PI and 2 Research Associates moved to the current Institute in 2003 from East Carolina University. The project was re-started in December 2004 with approval of no-cost extension until 512312008. We established that our chitin particle preparations induce phagocytic macrophages to produce cytokines IL-12, IL-18 and TNFo that down-regulate allergic immune responses. We also found that administration of chitin particles resulted in less likely induce the production of IL-10 and prostaglandin E2 PGE2. Both IL-10 and PGE2 enhance allergic responses. In this grant year, we have completed the study defining the mechanisms underlying that chitin particles block IL-10 production and PGE2 biosynthesis in macrophages.
