Abstract:

The purpose of the Advanced Pipe Technology Project was to document the present domestic and foreign state-of-the-art methods in marine piping technology, to identify and evaluate particularly cost-effective methods within that technology, and to establish an atmosphere of mutually beneficial cooperation among shipbuilders, design agents, regulatory bodies, research organizations, and marine suppliers in order to solve common problems relative to piping technology. The project was accomplished by a research team from Newport News Shipbuilding with assistance from many domestic and foreign industry consultants. The end products of the project are this Executive Summary Report, a Summary Final Report, a Detailed Final Report, and a Backup Data Report, all of which were prepared utilizing a common basic format to facilitate cross-referencing. The project was essentially a study of the mechanics of utilizing raw materials, equipment, and human resources to produce finished ship piping systems, and covered state-of-the-art methods related to piping designengineering, piping fabrication, and piping assemblyinstallation.
