This report results from a contract tasking University of Southampton as follows The contractor will investigate a simple alternative approach for selecting the polarization of light transmitted through an optical fiber based on the use of a fiber with a core transmitting region that has a helical corkscrew trajectory along the fiber. This should allow the use of fibers with a larger core area, capable of transmitting more power while maintaining good control of the light distribution in the fiber. The project will examine ways to produce helical-core fibers will test their properties for light propagation, will develop and test alternative designs and will deliver samples of helical-core optical fiber lasers.
