Scientific applications demand high performance CMOS Active Pixel Sensors. This paper will discuss where critical improvements are needed and describe how to achieve them. Our current drive in image sensor developments stem from the general needs of low-noise, high dynamic range, data sparsification either on-chip or on-pixel, high rates, radiation hardness, sensor thickness and sensitive area.
