Abstract:

QineriQ is conducting research into the wear and erosion of indirect fire guns under contract from the United Kingdom Ministry of Defense. The objectives of the work are to improve the UKs understanding of the causes and mechanisms of wear and erosion is gun barrels, and to investigate means by which the wear and erosion may be reduced, thereby extending the life of the gun barrels. Key to this work is the development of computational models that can predict the wear and erosion in a gun system, comprising a barrel, charge and projectile. The work is applicable also to direct fire guns, cannons and mortars. This paper describes experimental and theoretical studies that have been undertaken to investigate wear and erosion in conventional uncoated steel barrels.
