Abstract:

The question of Taiwans potential reunification with China is significant for US policymakers, as they assess US interests in Asia and redefine them. They must evaluate the effects of todays economic and political trends that are globalizing the worlds economies. This paper will review the nature of recent economic development in China, the potential impact of that development on the political unity of China, Taiwans contribution to the mainlands economy, and the impact of Taiwans continued economic contact with the mainland. It will also speculate on Taiwans value as an agent of permanent change in China, and how that role works toward US interests.
