Abstract:

Events of the past four years have challenged the North Atlantic Treaty Organization in ways that the alliance has never experienced in its forty-four year history. Senior NATO decision makers are struggling to devise policies, strategies, and force designs to cope with ...changes of biblical proportion... which ... have come to Europe at space age speed... 1 Indeed, there is a substantial body of thought which questions whether the United States should remain in NATO, or even whether there should be a NATO at all. The purpose of this paper is to consider the future of the Alliance, and the role U.S. forces should have in the NATO of the future.
