Abstract:

Nondestructive Evaluation NDE is a systematic approach to detecting flaws in parts. After detection, the effect of that defect on the performance of the material is required if a proper decision is to be made about mitigation. Therefore, the NDE of today MUST be more than just defect detection. The extrapolation of information from the NDE measurement or raw data is what the decision maker of today needs to evaluate the materials or systems performance in the presence of a defect. NDE is the only means of examining a material or component without destroying it, and is therefore the primary input for evaluation of system performance. NDE provides a very powerful tool for assisting decision makers about parts serviceability.
